KAI, St. Martins Square, Leicester
This is rather popular in Leicester, hyped up about by many people so I had to see what all the fuss was about for myself. This time I am food trying with a friend who has been before but for me it was my debut. I am an art enthusiast and walking through the doors my eyes were drawn to the art work which was Japanese/Thai inspired work with Japanese blossoms which I really admire. Also the yellow seating really popped.
They have a simple small menu available via scanning a QR code I guess because of covid and it actually makes it eco-friendly so that's a major thumbs up for me. They have a good selection for vegetarians and vegans, a small selection of pancakes, sweet and savoury, smashed avocado on toast section and few other breakfast bits. Having a small menu is good from my point of view as it makes choosing easy and it’s great when one dish is done well that trying to manage quantity but not achieving quality. The usual hot and drinks but a few classic breakfast cocktails like mimosas to wake you up for sure! The friend I was with had Eggs Florentine on toast, who said it was okay nothing major about the dish, just simple. I on the other hand had smashed avocado with scrambled sriracha tofu on toast of course, and 'wow' was the first response from the presentation and my first bite.
Tofu is an ingredient that absorbs any flavours and the sriracha definitely gave this dish an injection of flavour. It wasn't even spicy like overwhelming hot, just the right balance between spice, sourness and the avocado was the best thing to cool the pallet. Each item was a great balance of texture and flavours with the crumbly tofu, creamy avocado and crunch of the toasted sourdough bread. All things combined was a party in the mouth, the micro herbs and seed garnish added an extra boost of flavour and texture. Every mouthful was like a great song at this party in my mouth, and each mouthful was a joy to eat.
Now that was amazing but this song doesn't finish there, because we also had a sweet treat. We went all out with a hazelnut chocolate sauce that was drizzled all over the stack of three thick American style pancakes, all surrounded with sugar dusted strawberries. Again this dish is a sight for sore eyes or any eyes in fact! For someone meaning me who doesn't like nuts in chocolate especially because of the texture and doesn't like strawberries, yes you read right, I don't like strawberries, I ate half the portion! So let me explain, I like the flavour of strawberries but not fresh because yet again the texture. I like nuts and chocolate separately but not together especially if there is a load a little pieces of nuts in the chocolate. I have a picture of me eating a strawberry and I didn't just have one piece I kept eating and the pancakes were so soft and fluffy. I even got used to the taste of hazelnut chocolate sauce because it was ever so chocolaty, more chocolate than nut flavour suits me. After a bite I even said to my friend, maybe all this time I have been 'missing out'. I am so glad I tried this place, it was an excellent experience, one definitely I recommend and do try new things in life, it’s worth it! Now I know what all the hype was about, I can continue the hype and suggest you give this place a go!
