Horsefair Street, Leicester
Walking past this place is how we came across it but at first glance did not realise it was a vegan café. Walk around the corner to Horsefair Street, Leicester towards the town hall and there is stands. You will come across a grand building and a large building and a large brown door. As you enter the first thing I saw was the ceiling, a terracotta ceiling with white snakes. It seems like it is the original décor from whatever it was previously and for this was the wow factor that I usually look for in places. There is a balance from sturdy table and chairs and cosy sofa areas which is definitely my cup of tea. Talking of tea the café has hot and cold beverages and a range of teas and have lunch dishes as well as cake of course!
This was my first experience of a vegan café so I started with the basics and decided to have tea, earl grey. They to however have an excellent interesting selection of teas but like I said I will begin with the simple tea with my choice of milk being soya. In the corner of my eyes I could see a chocolate cake and as you all will get to know me I get excited about anything chocolate, I had to try it. The tea was tasty, smooth and creamy and guessing that texture came from the soya milk. The chocolate cake was most, chocolatey and divine, I could not tell the difference between a regular and diary free cake and in my opinion that is excellent. They have some random books on one side for customers to freely choose and read if they want and I went for a vegan baking book. I found a recipe for vegan brownies which I am yet to try, this is one area I want to attempt as I would like to challenge my baking skills and go vegan! It was a joyous afternoon with great food, drink and the best company.
Since that experience I knew I would be back and this time I was I was lone for a lazy lunch and what a lunch it was. I opted of the soya veg cottage pie that came with veg, potatoes and gravy. It was delicious to say the least, a beautiful gravy full of flavour and I poured all over the dish and made everything come alive. As I type this my mouth waters, as I dig the fork for the first bite felt great, the mash potato was textured and the veg and soya was flavoured with herbs and well-seasoned. Every bite was delicious and I wiped my dish clean. There is definitely more I want to try in this café and I have a feeling they will get used to seeing my face!
